Real Time Video Information in Transportation

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona uses AOPEN media players in moving vehicles to power the MouTV network for real-time travel information, news and advertising.

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) is Catalonia’s main public transport operator in Barcelona, covering the buses and metro network services in the city. With thousands of passengers a day riding the bus and metro networks in Barcelona, TMB wanted to provide users with real time public transport information along with general and practical information to enrich the journey. TMB is a leading innovator in transportation with its main emphasis on quality of service. The information system called MouTV has been deployed throughout the city, on subway platforms, in buses and subway cars and in tourist offices. When designing the system, TMB wanted a reliable and powerful system to satisfy their key objectives. The large network of digital signage systems is running on AOPEN Digital Engine media players including the AOPEN Digital Engine DE67-HA powered by 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i5 processors with Intel® vPro™ Technology

The Challenge

The Challenge

TMB’s desire to serve its passengers drives them to continually improve the quality of the service provided for the citizens of Barcelona, its tourists and its metropolitan area. Information and communication are key factors in TMB’s daily activity to enable citizen mobility. In this respect, TMB has made a commitment to using new technologies. The goal is to provide the thousands of passengers that make use of public transport with up-to-date information. The true challenge lies in the notion of real-time content updating, on a widespread network branching out over several stationary and non-stationary locations. How can you construct the system so that passengers still receive instant travel updates, while the system is located in moving vehicles? To make this possible, you would need to be able to operate the entire network in a centralized manner, besides having an excellent connectivity. As the network is set to broadcast 24/7, reliability of the systems hardware and software is also a fundamental point to take into consideration.

The Solution

A centrally managed system that is capable of sending real-time information to the right type of display and location via LAN, WIFI or 3.5G. MouTV is the information system that supplies the right content at the right time through an extensively controlled network. Next to the service information of the stops of the bus or metro, the system can display advertising and general relevant information. In the case of the subway platforms, MouTV incorporated the estimated time of arrival and the route including the times of the next connecting trains and buses based on the geographical position that is recognized by the system. At the bottom of the screen there is a ticker tape with text messages about news and corporate information.

The commercial application of the network is run in collaboration with JCDecaux, an international specialist in advertising, who together with ONadvertising offers space for commercial endorsement to a targeted audience. Advertisers are offered the option to select the points of broadcast according to the requested location. TMB created an elaborate DOOH network using avant-garde technologies. All transmissions have been tuned so that they can be broadcasted in terminals, trains and buses and can be updated without any delay. Moreover all systems that distribute content are configured to provide constant feedback regarding their current state of operation, enabling engineers to monitor hundreds of players from a single remote location.

Admira-Telefonica took charge of the project from a hardware and management point of view. Their challenge lay in the distribution of the content to the thousands of different displays that are scattered around Barcelona on platforms, stations and in moving vehicles. The centralized management system that was custom made for TMB made it possible to create, send and receive content from a single location. System monitoring also takes place at this location where IT and support staff are ready to keep the system up and running, thus lowering complexity and effort.

TMB needed versatile hardware with excellent connectivity options, which led them to the AOPEN Digital Engine. Thanks to the semi-industrial design, AOPEN players are extremely reliable and able to operate around the clock, under a wide variety of conditions. Furthermore, the compact design and ultra-small form factor of AOpen players made them easy to install in unconventional settings.

The AOPEN Digital Engine DE57-HA and DE67-HA were used to power the content broadcasted on platforms. These powerful editions of the Digital Engine series supports the latest 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family i3, i5, i7, which offers improved adaptive performance and built-in visual capabilities. These models have the capability to utilize Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT). Intel AMT enables TMB personnel to quickly fix many types of system problems remotely, thus getting systems back online faster in order to maintain a high level of passenger service. In addition it allows the user to manage, diagnose, and recover the systems even when they are powered off.

Inside the buses and metro trains AOPEN Digital Engine DE2700 was installed, with 3G and WIFI options. This entry-level media player is an easy-to-install and cost-effective solution with built-in processor and memory, with integrated graphics and Intel® Atom™ processor to suit most digital signage applications. WIFI and 3G make for an ideal combination to keep all players online at all times. Content can be streamed on-the-go through the 3G network connection, while at terminals and platforms the built-in WIFI can give a boost to download capabilities. On top of that the AOPEN media players can handle the rigors of use in moving vehicles and are therefore the hardware of choice for system integrator Admira-Telefonica.
